Ma la Icom penso bene di fare un'apparato superiore per i 50Mhz, pertanto oltre che all'Ico m IC-551 con soli 10W di potenza e con la FM , produsse la serie "maggiorata" D.
L'Icom IC-551D infatti aveva ben 80W di potenza, cosa non da poco per un apparato operante in VHF, io riuscì a provarne uno, facendolo arrivare direttamente dagli States, da rilevare il ricevitore ben silenzioso, anche se la ventola interna, necessaria per dissipare l'elevata potenza, si fa sentire rapidamente.
Un ottimo apparato, considerati i tempi in cui usci, peccato che inspiegabilmente la Icom non produsse un apparato per i 6 m lucky in the next line ie Icom IC-271, IC-471 (and IC-1271) which replaced the 251 series, 451, but which however did not give an heir to the Icom IC-551!
